When a storm closes you, tell Google
We searched “houston seo company” on 18 October 2026. The page opened with a map of three local businesses, and beside each one Google said whether it was open or when it would open next. People use that line to decide whether to call or drive over, and after a storm it can be wrong for days.
Houston knows how long those days can be. After the storm of May 16, 2024, around 922,000 customers in the area were without power at its height, the Associated Press reported. Hurricane Beryl came less than two months later.
Google offers two settings for this. If you will be closed for 7 days or less, it says to set special hours. For longer closures, it says to mark the business temporarily closed, which then shows on Maps and Search. Google also notes that for broad searches, temporarily closed businesses can rank after open ones. So use that status only for a real closure of more than a week, and remove it the day you reopen.
Storm season changes what people need to find
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. NOAA's National Hurricane Center puts the peak on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. A storm can bring a sudden need for roof repairs, tree work or backup power, and people often look for help on a phone.
New pages need time before they show up. Google has to find them, crawl them and decide they can be trusted. So the best time to prepare is spring, not the week a storm is named.

If you have to take the site offline for a day or two, Google says to show an error page with a 503 status code, and it describes switching off a whole site as something for a few days at most. Avoid 404 or 410 errors, which Google says remove pages from Search. Once the site is back, check it in Search Console.
